For over 20 years, Dahlia has remained in the same location, unchanged and constant. Done up in blue and clean as ever, it has a steady stream of Oriental customers walking in, like they know the place. The lady in charge of service promptly gives them cold barley and buck wheat water, even before they order. The TV is tuned in to a Japanese news channel, not that anybody is bothered, really. The shelves are lined with Japanese books and magazines, the owners speak fluent Japanese and the clientele too is very Japanese. But first a word about the service. It's so Japanese... straightforward and business-like. You order, you eat and you pay the bill. The Sashimi Platter is exceptionally good and the Tempura Moriawase batter-fried vegetables, fish and prawns a must-order. The Shredded Pork with Ginger is a little on the sweet side, but works. The Dahlia Maki Special is yet another treat, and dipped in the wassail-soy mix; these pop-its explode in all their fullness inside your palate. If you're a veggie daring to go Japanese, don't be discouraged. There's a neat selection in that section as well, including the Cucumber Maki, which purists might consider fraud, but veggies will enjoy. Requests for doggy bags are frowned upon because everything is made fresh and best had here. A thing about Dahlia... they are absolutely sticklers for time. So, even if you've made reservations, you will be disappointed if you don't make it in good time. Also, if you think you are being smart by making weekend plans for Dahlia, don't. Sunday is the one day they are closed. And they don't serve desserts. That is a totally different specialty, says Revathi who speaks fluent Japanese and English.
